Microbial Proteomics

Microbial Proteomics

The pre-course "Microbial Proteomics" will be held at Porto conte Ricerche, Alghero (Italy) from June 13th to 14th, 2017.

Background. Numerous progresses have recently been made in the proteomic analysis of single microbial isolates, enabling the detailed characterization of the different proteomes expressed by a bacterial genome in various conditions. In parallel, this has also opened the invaluable possibility of gathering information on all the microbial proteomes expressed by a microbial community: the metaproteome.

Aims. This “Microbial Proteomics” course is intended for graduate students and young researchers who wish to improve their analytical capabilities in the field of microbiology by implementing proteomic technologies in their study areas, but also to those that already have experience in proteomics but would like to gain a better understanding of the practical aspects and analytical issues involved in the application of proteomic technologies to microorganisms and microbial systems.

The pre-corse is expected to enable young graduate students a more profitable participation to the associate "2nd International Metaproteomics Symposium" that will be held from June 14th to 16th, 2017.

  • Corse venue
Porto Conte Ricerche is a research centre of the Science and Technology Park of Sardinia. The technological laboratories at Porto Conte Ricerche enable the integrated application of methodologies and experimental pipelines with a focus on industrial research, and are devoted to the development of knowledge, processes, products and services with applications in biotechnology (biomedicine, agroindustry, environment) and in food technology (quality, safety and sustainability in food distribution, consumers’ health, trademarks and labels).Since 2009, Porto Conte Ricerche has been actively involved in research projects aimed to the development of methods and pipelines for the characterization of microbial proteomes and microbial community proteomes, and in their application for biomarker discovery in human medicine, in veterinary  medicine, and in the agrifood sector. A specific research focus has been the investigation of the gut microbiota and of its relationships with the host genetic makeup (and of its connections with gut health and the predisposition to develop autoimmune diseases) as well as with environmental factors (including nutrition). The research activities have covered different aspects of microbial proteomics, from optimization of protein extraction methods, to analysis of tryptic peptides by high resolution mass spectrometry, to the development of dedicated bioinformatic pipelines for data analysis and interpretation.
